Pterygium

This is a benign superficial mass that grows from the conjunctiva (white tissue of the eye) and into the cornea. The growth of this tissue is primarily due to ultraviolet rays exposure and has a genetic predisposition. Pterygiums generally cause irritation and if they grow in excess, they can block vision.

The treatment consists of total surgical removal with a microimplant of healthy conjunctival tissue, from the upper conjunctiva, into the place where the pterygium use to be. This procedure avoids regrowth and gives a much better cosmetic appearance.
